My Home Base Garden
Project type
Urban Kitchen Garden
Date
2020 - ongoing
Location
Redondo Beach, CA
My personal kitchen garden is an ongoing exploration of small-space productivity and beauty, serving as both a daily ritual and a place of calm. Designed to bring the garden into close relationship with my home, a tiered raised bed is positioned at the threshold of a sliding glass door—intentionally placed to preserve sightlines while drawing color, scent, and movement into view. A larger raised bed expands planting capacity through dense, interplanted arrangements and continual succession, where edibles and pollinator-supporting flowers are fully integrated.
Designed to function as both garden and habitat, the space is consistently active with bees, butterflies, and birds. Layered, interplanted arrangements of herbs, vegetables, and flowers support beneficial insects and urban wildlife while maintaining a productive system. Regular harvests, the presence of water, and daily use anchor the garden as both a functional and restorative space.
The space continues to evolve toward a patio-scale food forest, where vertical layering and intentional placement guide a more naturalistic expression—structured at its foundation, yet allowed to grow loose and slightly wild. The result is a garden that feels immersive, productive, and deeply alive within a compact urban footprint.
